Read aloud: free online text reader
Paste text and follow along as it’s read to you, word by word. Unlimited length, any speed, and completely private — it runs on your device’s own voices.
Ways people use a text reader
- Proofreading. Listen to your draft at 1.0× and stop whenever a sentence makes you stumble; that is usually the one to rewrite.
- Reading support. Following highlighted words while listening reduces the effort of decoding text, which helps many readers with dyslexia.
- Language practice. Choose a device voice for the language you’re learning and slow it to 0.7×. Our language pages have practice scripts.
- Eyes-off reading. Turn long articles into listening while you cook or commute. For PDFs, use PDF to audio to pull out the text first.
Read aloud vs. AI voices
This reader uses the free voices built into your system. They are instant and unlimited but can sound flat. When you need a natural voice, delivery direction or a downloadable file, use the AI text to speech studio instead — it renders MP3s with 30 neural voices.
Getting better voices on your device
On Windows, open Settings → Time & language → Speech to add more voices. On a Mac, System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System Voice → Manage Voices lets you download higher-quality “Enhanced” and “Premium” voices. On iPhone and iPad, the same menu lives under Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content. Reload this page after installing.
Questions people ask
Is Read Aloud free and unlimited?
Yes. It uses the speech voices already built into your phone, tablet or computer, so there is no server cost and no length limit. Your text never leaves your device.
Why do the voices differ between devices?
Each operating system ships its own voices. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS all have different sets, and Chrome adds some online Google voices. Voices marked with a region code (en-GB, es-MX) speak with that accent.
Can I download the read-aloud audio?
No. Browsers do not let websites record their built-in voices. If you need an MP3, paste the text into the AI text to speech tool, which renders downloadable audio.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, most devices can read aloud without a connection using their local voices. Online-only voices (often labelled Google or Natural) need the internet.
Is reading aloud useful for proofreading?
Yes. Hearing text read at a steady pace exposes missing words, repeated words and sentences that run too long, because your eyes tend to auto-correct what your ears catch. Many editors recommend it as a final pass.
