What makes Italian sound right
Italian is very regular to read, with two details that make or break the sound: double consonants are held longer ("pala" and "palla" are different words) and stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable unless an accent says otherwise ("città"). Neural voices hold doubles and place stress the way a native speaker does.
Tips for better Italian audio
- Always type written accents (è, à, ù). They move the stress and change words like "e" (and) vs "è" (is).
- Keep double consonants exactly as spelled; a missing letter is audible.
- For learners, "Slow & clear" at 0.85× makes the doubles easy to hear.
- Storyteller suits Italian children's stories and recipes read aloud.

Questions people ask
Is Italian text to speech free?
Yes. Paste up to 5,000 characters of Italian text, choose a voice and download the MP3 with no account. An hourly fair-use limit applies to the AI voices; device voices on the Read Aloud page are unlimited.
Which voice is best for Italian?
Every voice speaks every supported language. For Italian, good starting points are Leda, Orus, Callirrhoe, Iapetus. Audition two with your own first sentence — the difference is character and register, not accuracy.
Can I use Italian text to speech to practise pronunciation?
Yes. Choose the "Slow & clear" delivery, lower the pace to 0.8×, and put [pause 1s] after each phrase so you have time to repeat it aloud (shadowing). Download the MP3 to practise offline.
Can I download Italian text to speech as MP3?
Yes. After the Italian audio renders, press Download MP3 (or WAV). The file is encoded in your browser, so there is no upload step, no watermark and no account.
How natural do the Italian AI voices sound?
They are neural voices from Google's Gemini speech model, trained on real recordings, so rhythm and intonation are much closer to a human reader than older robotic engines. Accuracy is highest with correctly spelled text; unusual names may need a phonetic spelling.
Can I mix languages in one script?
Yes. Set the language to "Detect from text" and the voice will switch naturally between languages, for example an English lesson with Spanish example phrases.
