What makes French sound right
French is hard for older speech engines because so much is written but not said: silent final consonants, liaisons ("les amis" sounds like "lé-z-ami") and elision. Neural voices learn these patterns from recordings, so they read ordinary French much more naturally than rule-based systems did.
Tips for better French audio
- Keep French punctuation spacing (a space before ? ! : ;). It does not change the audio, and it keeps your script correct if you publish it.
- Write accents properly. "a" and "à", or "ou" and "où", can change the reading.
- Spell out abbreviations such as "M." (Monsieur) or "Mme" (Madame) if you hear them read letter by letter.
- Use the "Slow & clear" style to hear liaisons distinctly while you practise.

Questions people ask
Is French text to speech free?
Yes. Paste up to 5,000 characters of French text, choose a voice and download the MP3 with no account. An hourly fair-use limit applies to the AI voices; device voices on the Read Aloud page are unlimited.
Which voice is best for French?
Every voice speaks every supported language. For French, good starting points are Despina, Iapetus, Leda, Schedar. Audition two with your own first sentence — the difference is character and register, not accuracy.
Can I use French text to speech to practise pronunciation?
Yes. Choose the "Slow & clear" delivery, lower the pace to 0.8×, and put [pause 1s] after each phrase so you have time to repeat it aloud (shadowing). Download the MP3 to practise offline.
Can I mix languages in one script?
Yes. Set the language to "Detect from text" and the voice will switch naturally between languages, for example an English lesson with Spanish example phrases.
