What makes German sound right

German spelling is regular, but long compound nouns (Donaudampfschifffahrt) and word stress are where synthetic voices can stumble. Modern neural voices split compounds by ear the way a native speaker would, and they place stress on the first syllable of most native words.

Tips for better German audio

  • Always type ä, ö, ü and ß. Writing "ae" or "ss" instead can change the pronunciation.
  • Very long compounds read more clearly if you add a hyphen at the natural joint: "Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung".
  • Write out abbreviations like "z. B." (zum Beispiel) or "usw." if you want them spoken in full.
  • Formal "Sie" scripts suit the Newsreader style; for friendly "du" content try Natural or Energetic promo.

Questions people ask

Is German text to speech free?

Yes. Paste up to 5,000 characters of German text, choose a voice and download the MP3 with no account. An hourly fair-use limit applies to the AI voices; device voices on the Read Aloud page are unlimited.

Which voice is best for German?

Every voice speaks every supported language. For German, good starting points are Orus, Kore, Erinome, Achird. Audition two with your own first sentence — the difference is character and register, not accuracy.

Can I use German text to speech to practise pronunciation?

Yes. Choose the "Slow & clear" delivery, lower the pace to 0.8×, and put [pause 1s] after each phrase so you have time to repeat it aloud (shadowing). Download the MP3 to practise offline.

Can I mix languages in one script?

Yes. Set the language to "Detect from text" and the voice will switch naturally between languages, for example an English lesson with Spanish example phrases.
