What makes Chinese sound right

Mandarin is tonal: mā, má, mǎ and mà are four different words. A speech engine also has to apply tone sandhi, the rule that changes a third tone before another third tone (你好 is said "ní hǎo"), and pick the right reading for characters with more than one, such as 行 (xíng or háng). Neural voices handle these far better than older systems.

Tips for better Chinese audio

  • Simplified and traditional characters both work; the menu option speaks standard Mandarin.
  • Use Chinese punctuation (,。?) so the voice pauses naturally.
  • If a polyphonic character is misread, swap in a synonym or rephrase the phrase.
  • Learners can set "Slow & clear" and 0.8× to hear each tone distinctly.

Questions people ask

Is Chinese text to speech free?

Yes. Paste up to 5,000 characters of Chinese text, choose a voice and download the MP3 with no account. An hourly fair-use limit applies to the AI voices; device voices on the Read Aloud page are unlimited.

Which voice is best for Chinese?

Every voice speaks every supported language. For Chinese, good starting points are Kore, Charon, Aoede, Iapetus. Audition two with your own first sentence — the difference is character and register, not accuracy.

Can I use Chinese text to speech to practise pronunciation?

Yes. Choose the "Slow & clear" delivery, lower the pace to 0.8×, and put [pause 1s] after each phrase so you have time to repeat it aloud (shadowing). Download the MP3 to practise offline.

Can I download Chinese text to speech as MP3?

Yes. After the Chinese audio renders, press Download MP3 (or WAV). The file is encoded in your browser, so there is no upload step, no watermark and no account.

How natural do the Chinese AI voices sound?

They are neural voices from Google's Gemini speech model, trained on real recordings, so rhythm and intonation are much closer to a human reader than older robotic engines. Accuracy is highest with correctly spelled text; unusual names may need a phonetic spelling.

Can I mix languages in one script?

Yes. Set the language to "Detect from text" and the voice will switch naturally between languages, for example an English lesson with Spanish example phrases.
