Casting a voice: what actually matters

Voice directors choose on three things before anything else, and you can use the same shortlist:

  • Register. Lower voices tend to read as calm and authoritative; higher voices as bright and approachable. Neither is better — match the content, not a stereotype.
  • Energy. An ad needs lift at the ends of sentences; a meditation needs the opposite. The delivery direction controls this more than the voice choice.
  • Pace. About 150 words per minute is a natural narration speed. Tutorials and language content work better slower (120–130); promos can go faster (160–170). Check yours with the words-to-minutes calculator.

Once you have a voice, write your line the way it should be spoken. Short sentences, one idea each, and a stressed word where the meaning turns. The SSML guide explains the same controls in the markup that professional speech systems use.

Questions people ask

Is this AI voice generator free?

Yes. Auditioning voices, using the casting assistant and rendering up to 5,000 characters per clip with MP3 download are free, with no account. An hourly fair-use limit keeps it available for everyone.

Is there any free AI voice generator without sign-up?

Yes — Auditext needs no account. Pick any of the 30 voices, generate up to 5,000 characters per clip and download the MP3. There is no watermark and no trial period.

What is the most realistic AI voice?

Realism depends more on the script and direction than on the voice. Current neural models such as Google’s Gemini TTS (which powers Auditext) produce natural breathing, timing and intonation; give them short sentences, punctuation and a delivery direction and most listeners can’t tell quickly.

Can ChatGPT generate a voice?

ChatGPT’s voice mode speaks its replies aloud, but it does not export narration files of your own script. To turn your text into a downloadable voiceover, use a text to speech tool like this one.

Can I clone my own voice or copy a celebrity?

No. Auditext only uses the 30 prebuilt synthetic voices. It does not clone voices and the casting assistant will not imitate real people — describe the qualities you want (age, energy, accent, pace) instead.

How do I make an AI voice sound less robotic?

Give it a delivery direction ("warm, unhurried, smiling"), break long sentences into short ones, add [pause 0.5s] where a person would breathe, and mark the one word per sentence that carries the meaning with *asterisks*.

Can one voice speak other languages?

Yes. Every voice can speak all supported languages, so you can keep the same character across English, Spanish or Japanese versions of a video. Choose the language in the menu for the most accurate accent.

Which voice is best for YouTube narration?

For explainers, Charon (informative, lower) and Kore (firm, higher) are clear and neutral. For upbeat intros, try Puck or Laomedeia. For documentary or history content, Gacrux or Algieba. Audition two or three with your own first line before committing.
