PDF to audio converter
Open a PDF (even a scanned one), pick the pages, and listen. Unlimited read-aloud on your device, or natural AI voices with MP3 download. The file never leaves your browser.
Making PDFs pleasant to listen to
PDFs are built for printing, not reading aloud. The text is stored as positioned fragments, so we rebuild it: hyphenated line breaks are re-joined (“infor-mation” becomes “information”), soft line wraps become spaces, and paragraph breaks are kept so the voice pauses in the right places.
- Skip the front matter. Start at the first real page; tables of contents are tedious to hear.
- Strip running headers. A title repeated on every page gets read every page. Delete it in the box once.
- Tables and footnotes rarely read well. Consider summarising a table in a sentence.
- Multi-column layouts usually come out in the right order; if a page sounds jumbled, check it by eye.
Have a Word document instead? The main text to speech studio accepts .docx and .txt uploads.
Questions people ask
How do I convert a PDF to audio for free?
Choose your PDF, select the pages you want, then either press Read aloud to listen instantly with your device voice (unlimited), or send up to 5,000 characters at a time to the AI studio and download an MP3.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is extracted inside your browser with Mozilla’s PDF.js library. Only the text you choose to render with an AI voice is sent to the speech engine, and only when you press Generate.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned documents are images of pages with no text layer, so Auditext offers to recognise the text with an AI vision model (OpenAI gpt-6-luna through Vercel AI Gateway), up to 10 pages at a time. Check the recognised text before listening; handwriting and low-quality scans can contain errors.
Is there a way for a PDF to be read aloud?
Yes. Open the PDF here and press Read aloud: the text is read with your device’s voice and each word is highlighted as it is spoken. Adobe Acrobat Reader also has a built-in Read Out Loud option under View, and Microsoft Edge can read PDFs aloud from its toolbar.
Can I convert a PDF to MP3?
Yes. Choose “AI voice + MP3”, load your pages into the studio, pick a voice and press Generate speech, then Download MP3. Each render takes up to 5,000 characters, so long documents are exported in parts.
Why are headers and page numbers read out?
PDFs store running headers, footers and page numbers as ordinary text. Remove them from the text box before listening, or select a page range that skips front matter.
Can I turn a whole book into an audiobook?
Listening to a whole book with Read Aloud works with no limit. For MP3 files, render chapter by chapter — each AI render takes up to 5,000 characters (about five minutes of audio). Only convert books you have the right to use.
