What makes Japanese sound right

Japanese text to speech has two hard problems: choosing the right reading for each kanji (日 can be "hi", "nichi" or "ka") and applying pitch accent, the rise and fall that separates 箸 (hashi, chopsticks) from 橋 (hashi, bridge). Neural voices trained on real speech get both right far more often than older engines.

Tips for better Japanese audio

  • If a name or rare kanji is read wrongly, write it in hiragana or katakana instead.
  • Use Japanese punctuation (、。) — the engine pauses at them naturally.
  • For study, the "Slow & clear" style plus [pause 1s] after each sentence gives you time to shadow.
  • Mixed English words written in katakana (コーヒー) sound more natural than English letters.

Questions people ask

Is Japanese text to speech free?

Yes. Paste up to 5,000 characters of Japanese text, choose a voice and download the MP3 with no account. An hourly fair-use limit applies to the AI voices; device voices on the Read Aloud page are unlimited.

Which voice is best for Japanese?

Every voice speaks every supported language. For Japanese, good starting points are Leda, Callirrhoe, Charon, Vindemiatrix. Audition two with your own first sentence — the difference is character and register, not accuracy.

Can I use Japanese text to speech to practise pronunciation?

Yes. Choose the "Slow & clear" delivery, lower the pace to 0.8×, and put [pause 1s] after each phrase so you have time to repeat it aloud (shadowing). Download the MP3 to practise offline.

Can I mix languages in one script?

Yes. Set the language to "Detect from text" and the voice will switch naturally between languages, for example an English lesson with Spanish example phrases.
